Military Skills Courses

MILS 2250 BASIC MOUNTAINEERING
This course introduces students to basic military mountaineering skills. Students will learn how to rapel, rock climb, tie various knots and even make their own harnesses. Two section times are offered.

MILS 2260 BASIC ORIENTEERING
This course instructs the principles of orienteering including basic map reading, terrain association, and compass skills. Course running techniques are applied in filed orienteering events. Instruction includes safety and survival in hot and cold weather environments.

MILS 2270 BASIC RIFLE MARKSMANSHIP
This course introduces students to military marksmanship training. Students will receive hands-on training with the M-16 assault rifle and other Army issue weapons. This course utilizes sophisticated electronic equipment to simulate both training and combat environments.

Freshman Class and Laboratory

MILS 1101/1102 OFFICERSHIP AND THE US ARMY
These courses form the core of the freshman year curriculum. MILS 1101 and 1102 provide the framework for officership in a classroom setting.

MILS 1111/1112 LEADERSHIP LABORATORY
MILS 1111 and 1112 teach hands-on skills such as marching and map reading in a laboratory setting.

Sophomore Class and Laboratory

MILS 2201/2202 SMALL ORGANIZATIONAL OPERATION
These courses form the core of the sophomore year curriculum. MILS 2201 and 2202 provide the focus on leadership and management theory.

MILS 2211/2212 LEADERSHIP LABORATORY
MILS 2211 and 2212 teach hands-on skills such as land navigation and small unit tactics in a laboratory setting.

Junior Class and Laboratory

MILS 3301/3302 SMALL UNIT TACTICS
MILS 3301/3302 form the core of the junior year curriculum. They focus on military tactics at the platoon level and lower. Cadets learn how to conduct operations such as reconnaissance, ambushes, and attacks. Students also participate in the Leadership Development Program where their abilities to lead are evaluated.

MILS 3311/3312 LEADERSHIP LABORATORY
MILS 3311/3312 allow Cadets to practice the small unit tactics learned during class.

MILS 3321 ARMED CONFLICT IN SOCIETY
MILS 3321 provides a survey of US Army history. Students read historical accounts and produce an independent research paper.

Senior Class and Laboratory

MILS 4401/4402 CONTEMPORARY MILITARY ENVIRONMENT
Senior students study operations in the contemporary military environment. They discuss current Army operations, policies, learn mentorship techniques and plan and conduct training instruction for all Cadets.

MILS 4411/4412 LEADERSHIP LABORATORY
Senior Cadets serve as instructors for younger Cadets during this time.
